Kincaid Park “The Bluffs” and Carr-Gottstein "Discovery Park" in Anchorage

Launch: 300’ MSL
LZ: 0’ MSL (top landing preferred!)
Vertical: 300’
Horizontal: 300’ to (1:1 Glide)

Site Description:
Kincaid Park is the closest ridge soaring site for Anchorage residents; unfortunately it’s right in the center of Anchorage International airspace (Class B). There are five pilots who are approved to request access from the airport when conditions are favorable for soaring.
If you want to fly there, call one of the pilots listed below to obtain clearance and receive a site orientation. Calling for permission is not just a courtesy, it’s a requirement from Anchorage International. If you don’t receive clearance and fly anyway, you’ll be arrested.

Works Best When:
South winds 8-12 mph from 170 to 230 degrees azimuth.

Requirements:
Strong high-wind launch and top landing skills. Clearance from Anchorage International. Flying is restricted to 300’ AGL.

Potential Hazards:
If you sink out, land near the base of the hill and not out in the mud flats: it’s horribly filthy out there and quite dangerous to boot. Watch for old cars, washing machines, etc. at the base of the hill. If you manage to top land, watch for the chain link fence and the signs posted warning of the “cliff".

Looking West toward Point Campbell

Launch: 30’ MSL
LZ: 0’ MSL (training and kiting area)
Vertical: 30’
Horizontal: NA

Right: Entrance from Discovery Bay Drive

Site Description:
Discovery point is a newly aquired city property that projects out into cook inlet in such a manner that south winds and 90-degrees left and right allow for good kiting. On south wind days the small hill may be soared and landing on the glacial silt is possible. Landing to the north and south are both marshy and not recommended.

Works Best When:
90 - 270 degrees for kiting. 180 at 12-15 mph may be soarable.

Requirements:
Gore-Tex hiking boots for the boggy LZ

Potential Hazards:
Muddy areas, small trees and uneven footing below the main grassy area. Boggy areas to the east and west may contain deep sloughs (DO NOT land in the sloughs as they may be life threatening!)
